In 2019, AHRQ reported errors occurring in 1 of 112,000 surgeries in the OR, but higher in ambulatory and IR. There were 300 million surgeries around the world in 2020. Calculating the ratio, there were 3000 never events in that year alone. From my experience and literature research, poor surgical outcomes and errors are correlated to high turnover rates of perioperative leaders due to deficit in standardized training and competencies and lack of formal mentorship and coaching programs when they already have a demanding, high-pressure, and fast paced job.
The life span of these leaders are less than 1-2 years, resulting in a lack of team and safety culture, ineffective communication, and practice drift. The average malpractice lawsuit related to surgical error starts at 250k up to millions. Additionally, inefficiencies, waste, redundancies, increased length of stay, and readmission rates are other indicators of poor patient outcomes that financially impact healthcare systems.
We, at Operation: INSPIRE, have the solution for you. We are a community of diverse and inclusive subject matter experts who live and breathe perioperative services. Some of us started from very humble beginnings - as housekeeper, frontline staff, clinician, to leaders. We will resonate with your team, leaders, and patients. We are passion- and purpose-driven, team-based, and lifelong partners. Working with INSPIRE is a proactive solution (unfortunately, sometimes can be reactive) in fostering a safe environment for your team with competent leaders, resulting in better patient outcomes and bottom line.
